I’d spent a considerable amount of time in the past two decades mired in education… teaching, managing, designing curricula. By far the most enjoyment came from teaching the arts (yes, I do consider language an art as well, but just go with it). I thought I’d share some outside links to the work of my students, many of whom have been quite impressive for primary school kids.

 

Art class

I really wanted to teach students to appreciate art beyond just mimicking what they’re seeing in the comics and cartoons they’re familiar with. Translating what one sees in three dimensions into a two dimensional image takes a lot of learning, but they grasped how to render what they’re actually seeing very quickly.

Here are some examples of the work the kids did:

cooking class

Besides drawing, I’ve always loved cooking. I think of all these pursuits as a form of composition, as you’re pretty much putting together ingredients into a final product, with the preparation and execution being the technique so it’s basically just the same as making an image isn’t it? Of course the students enjoyed the eating part too.
